New z196 Configuration Summarized: Sidebar

The powerful new mainframe configuration at Volvo IT includes:
- New zEnterprise hardware: Two IBM zEnterprise System z196 model M49 three-book systems
- New Hybrid zBX hardware: Two IBM zEnterprise System BladeCenter Extension (zBX) chassis
- Platform management firmware: IBM zEnterprise Unified Resource Manager on all above soon
- Volvo IT-enabled z196 capacity: Approximately 23,000 System z MIPS user-enabled capacity
- z196 Processor Units (PUs): 13 CPs, two IFLs, two ICFs, one zIIP and one zAAP user PU designated and standard, nine SAPs, and two spares/z196. Workload optimized using sub-capacity CPs/full-capacity specialty engines.
- Extensive headroom: 30 PUs in use (of 60 aboard)/z196 M49. So, 30 PUs of headroom/z196 for Capacity Backup (CBU), business growth/Capacity Upgrade on Demand (CUoD), or as spares/SAPs.
- Capacity Backup (CBU): Each z196 is able to run all of Volvo IT’s workloads; CBU lets unused PUs on live z196 replace those of downed z196s for (rare) outage periods.
- z196 processor performance: z196 MPU is the world's fastest server processor at less than 5.2 GHz; impressive IBM quad-core, 45 nanometer, 1.5B transistor chip. Volvo IT full-capacity specialty engines provide approximately 1,200 MIPS (unprocessed).
- System z Logical Partitions: Volvo IT currently runs 50 LPARs over both z196s.
- Operating systems: z/OS V1.10/1.12, z/VM V5.4/6.1, z/VSE 4.V1/4.2, SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10/1.1
- Mainframe cluster: IBM z/OS Parallel Sysplex links two z196s into fully resilient, highly available cluster with DB2 data sharing.
- Cluster and Disaster Recovery/Business Continuity (DR/BC) automation: IBM GDPS (Geographically Dispersed Parallel Sysplex) solution automates/oversees DR/BC recovery/failover.
- Online storage capacity: More than 200TB of host enterprise disk capacity online
- Primary applications: COBOL transactional applications (mainly IMS, some CICS), database serving (DB2), Java (WebSphere Application Server), and hundreds of Linux virtual servers (under z/VM).
