Exploitation of the zEnterprise 114 (z114) Intraensemble Data Network (IEDN). IEDN is a private network that connects elements of a zEnterprise Ensemble. z/VSE can connect as a z/VM guest to the IEDN or in LPAR mode.
z/VSE 5.1 exploits a z114 feature to support the z/VSE z/VM IP Assist (z/VSE VIA), which allows selected z/VSE TCP/IP applications in a z/VM guest environment to access the external network or an IEDN without requiring a TCP/IP stack on z/VSE.
Layer 2 (data link layer) support for IPv4 and IPv6 communication. Layer 2 is required for IPv6 communication with the z/VM VSWITCH.
z/VSE 5.1 will provide Virtual LAN (VLAN) support. VLAN allows a physical network to be divided administratively into separate logical networks. In Layer 3 configurations, VLANs can be transparently used by IPv6/VSE V1.1 and TCP/IP for VSE/ESA V1.5F.
IPv6/VSE V1.1 is the first exploiter of 64-bit virtual storage with its large TCP window support.
The TS7700 Virtualization Engine Copy Export and Multi-Cluster Grid support as well as the Geographically Dispersed Parallel Sysplex (GDPS) client enhance z/VSE's disaster recovery capabilities. The GDPS client connects to a GDPS controlling z/OS system, which can monitor z/VSE 5.1 systems running as a z/VM guest.
z/VSE 5.1 contains additional POWER and z/VSE Connector enhancements.
Two new statements of direction: IBM intends to provide CICS Explorer capabilities for CICS TS for VSE/ESA and the Linux Fast Path function in LPAR environments.
