Notable deliverables in software and hardware, and excellent conferences and education opportunities made 2008 a remarkable year for z/VSE. We expect no less in 2009. This column identifies the dates of significant events and happenings related to z/VSE for the coming year. This includes milestones, deadlines, events, and information publication dates that z/VSE users can use in their planning efforts.
May 15-19, 2009: WAVV
WAVV 2009 will be held in Orlando, FL, at The Florida Hotel & Conference Center. WAVV is a z/VM, z/VSE, Linux, and off-platform volunteer user group that sponsors a yearly education conference and vendor product show.
The agenda grid with session titles is available at http://www.wavv.org; as abstracts are completed, they also will be posted. A review of the session grid for WAVV 2009 should prove enticing enough for anyone to attend, as 2009 promises even more wonderful sessions and informative presenters than past years.
May (dates TBA) 2009: IBM System z Technical Conference
The European Technical Conference will be held in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, and will cover z/OS, VSE, z/VM, and Linux all on IBM System z hardware. I haven’t attended this conference, but I’m very familiar with many of the presenters and would expect excellent technical sessions and great information. For more information, visit www.ibm.com.
July 31, 2009
July 31 is the official end of service date for z/VSE 3.1. Hopefully, your plans have already been made and you’re well on your way to migrating to z/VSE 4.2. Please note that z/VSE 4.2 became available for order Oct. 17, 2008; on that same date, z/VSE 4.1 was withdrawn from marketing.
September 2009: WAVV 2010 Planning
WAVV planning sessions for the following year are now conducted via Web conferencing in September and October, so be sure a WAVV committee person knows what session topics are important to you and is aware of any ideas you may have to improve the WAVV experience. Visit www.wavv.org for contact information.
