New IBM zEnterprise System innovations and enhanced capabilities are poised to help organizations of all sizes navigate the shifting marketplace and, ultimately, improve the customer experience.
The July 23, 2013, zEnterprise announcements span the breadth of the System z platform from a new business class system—the zEnterprise BC12 (zBC12)—to high-end system enhancements, to new operating system releases for z/OS and z/VM and to new industry solutions. These technologies support organizations’ efforts to take advantage of cloud, analytics and mobile, underpinned with the highest levels of security.
These announcements are all about delivering value—even greater efficiency and an ability to innovate to seize new market opportunities:
Big data and analytics. System z is recognized as a leading data hub while maintaining a single, secure version of the truth, and we continue to build on our full range of analytics capabilities. The zBC12 can be integrated with the IBM DB2 Analytics Accelerator for greater query performance and savings vs. the competition. In addition, we provide continued support for our enhanced Cognos and SPSS software to exploit patterns found in historical and transactional data.
Cloud and IT infrastructure. Advanced virtualization features with a zEnterprise system provide an efficient infrastructure for deploying private clouds for workloads that scale both horizontally and vertically at a low total cost of ownership.
Our newly updated Enterprise Linux Server is a packaged cloud solution that can support up to 520 virtual servers in a single system for as low as $1 per day per virtual server. Additionally, z/VM version 6.3 now supports 1 TB of real memory and is enabled with Linux to be managed via Open Stack.
zEnterprise hybrid capabilities continue to expand as the Unified Resource Manager now optimizes x86 resources in the zEnterprise BladeCenter Extension; and a new Ensemble Availability Management capability adds notifications for virtual servers for improved monitoring and management during operations.
Mobile. System z is uniquely designed to manage the peaks in mobile transaction volumes and help ensure they run securely. Combined with the IBM software portfolio, we continue to add new technologies and products to strengthen the mobile capabilities of System z.
We’re continuing to help clients better bridge the gap between mobile devices and enterprise data and services with native JSON support and conversion between JSON and data structures with the new CICS Transaction Server Feature Pack for Mobile. Multiplatform mobile applications can be developed with IBM Worklight and Rational Developer for the Enterprise.
Clients can count on secure access to System z data on mobile devices and integration with LDAP on zEnterprise BC12 and EC12 with IBM Endpoint Manager, while Cognos Mobile offers views of dashboards, reports and more on mobile devices.
